Exercise to Protect Aging Bodies — and Brains

age_exercise_0126.jpg

Comment From Online Personal Trainer Dean Piazza

This is the first in depth study I have seen on exercise and Aging Bodies so it just confirms what we already know but its backed up with scientific research which makes it that much more important.
Its a great read and if you need motivation to exercise and move more as you get older then this article is what you need to read !

Dean Piazza

====================================================================================

We all know that exercise is good for you. Staying physically active helps keep your heart healthy and your muscles strong, and in cancer patients it has even been shown to ward off relapse. Now a series of independently conducted studies on the effects of exercise in healthy older adults, published on Monday in the Archives of Internal Medicine, confirms that logging time at the gym not only helps maintain good health but may even prevent the onset of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, osteoarthritis and dementia

Weight Loss Tips - Sorting Fact from Fiction

waist_line_420-420x0.jpg

Comment from personal trainer Dean Piazza:

This is a great article to point out some myths that exist in the weight loss industry. Losing weight and getting fit requires discipline and consistency with exercise , and reducing your intake of foods which are highly processed and high in sugar. Its a combination of Eating less and moving more, and getting into a good routine so a healthy lifestyle becomes second nature !!

Dean Piazza
www.getfit.com.au

Australian scientists Garry Egger and Sam Egger separate truth from fiction in the quest for weight loss.

There is a great deal of misunderstanding about weight loss, which extends well beyond the public to health professionals. On one level, that is hardly surprising because the evidence can be very unclear. The science of health behaviour – including nutrition, exercise, sleep and weight management – is generally less developed than research relating to other medical questions. Unvetted ”expert” claims abound.

Commercial sponsors of weight-loss diets make loud proclamations for the superiority of their product but lifetime adherence to a restrictive diet – which is necessary to keep off weight once it is lost – is unrealistic for most people.

We assessed the best available evidence on weight loss and maintenance and used this to compile a 20-statement survey – with true or false responses – which we then gave to two groups of people: 173 GPs and 129 truck drivers and tradesmen.

We found doctors were almost as confused as truckies and tradies. The doctors disagreed with most of the supporting evidence on 40 per cent of our questions, the others on 49 per cent.

The statements below attracted the most incorrect answers, with our summary of evidence for and against them.

It seems doctors could benefit from more education and training in this area, and much more research into these questions is required, to confirm or challenge the accuracy of so-called ”facts” on which weight-loss advice is based.

Fruit juice is about as fattening as beer – TRUE

In terms of kilojoule content, equivalent servings of fruit juice and beer are similar. But as alcohol cannot be stored in the body, and is never directly converted to fat, any fattening effect of alcohol is dependent on other factors, particularly accompanying energy intake. So the often-quoted ”beer belly” is really more of a ”beer plus food and drink” belly. Fruit juice is as potentially fattening as beer in equivalent amounts.

Humans need eight glasses of water a day – FALSE

The physiologist Heinz Valtin tried to track the basis of this belief, which he claims may be responsible for the excessive intake of high-calorie fluids in the modern diet.

Valtin showed a person’s fluid needs depended on age, gender, activity level and state of health – as well as the weather – and varied from 500 millilitres (about three glasses) to four litres (24 glasses) a day. Despite the popularity of the eight glasses ”rule”, international guidelines on fluid intake, now under development, suggest it is arbitrary and meaningless.

Dairy products can help weight loss – TRUE

The accuracy of this statement remains controversial. Because of the fat content of most natural dairy products, a common belief exists that all dairy products cause weight gain. But recent research – both across communities and in dietary experiments with individuals – suggests eating low-fat dairy is linked to weight loss.

There are indications that certain dairy ingredients, such as whey protein, and combinations of ingredients, such as protein and calcium, can increase feelings of fullness, and increase the calories lost in the faeces – both of which may assist weight loss.

Chocolate is healthy provided it is dark – FALSE

There has been more than a decade of research on the health benefits of dark chocolate since the antioxidant effects of cocoa were discovered. Cocoa is high in bitter-tasting flavinoids, which are the prime source of such antioxidants but which many chocolate manufacturers extract to improve taste.

However, there are no labelling requirements to inform the consumer of this. Sugar, which can lessen the benefits of cocoa, is also often added to improve palatability. Hence, while genuine dark chocolate has health benefits, chocolate that is simply labelled ”dark” does not necessarily have these benefits.

Exercise is better than dieting for weight loss – FALSE

It is easier to reduce energy intake by a given amount than to increase energy expenditure by the same amount. Reducing intake by 1000 calories a day, for example, is the equivalent of walking an extra 15 kilometres daily. For this reason, dieting is more likely to be successful in the early stages of a weight-loss program. But exercise is important in weight loss and it may be more important than dieting in the maintenance stage, after effective weight loss. And both psychological and physiological factors must be considered, in which case neither exercise nor dieting is better than the other.

A low-protein diet is best for weight loss – FALSE

The success of a weight-loss diet depends mainly on the total calories. Specific nutrients generally make little difference but some have advantages. Protein can increase the sensation of fullness, particularly in comparison to sugary, starchy carbohydrate foods. In the context of the modern high-calorie diet, a reasonable intake of protein is likely to be better for weight loss than a low-protein diet.

The present protein intake of about 13 to 15 per cent of total energy is well below the estimated 25 to 30 per cent often proposed for weight loss and a healthy diet.

Fat people don’t get more hungry than lean people – TRUE

It is difficult to evaluate a subjective feeling such as hunger among individuals, but research indicates hunger is not a distinguishing factor in obesity. Much overeating has a psychological and environmental, rather than physiological, basis and hence there is little reason to believe in a difference in genuine hunger – as distinct from psychologically conditioned ”appetite” – between slim and overweight people.

Swimming is better than walking for weight loss – FALSE

In general, the best exercises for weight loss are those that are weight-bearing, such as walking or jogging. Up to 30 per cent less energy is used in activities such as swimming or cycling, which support weight and can be carried out at a more leisurely pace.

Because fat floats, an obese individual is likely to use relatively less energy while swimming, particularly if that person is an experienced swimmer. This does not negate the benefits of swimming as an exercise but reduces its relative effectiveness for fat loss compared with walking.

Weight lifting is good for fat loss – TRUE

In general, any form of exercise involving energy expenditure has benefit for weight loss. Resistance training is often underrated and considered only for the development of strength or size. However, where large muscles or muscle groups are used – or in resistance training using light weights at high repetitions – weight lifting can be effective for weight loss as well as muscle strengthening.

The best measure of body fat is body mass index -FALSE

Body mass index – a ratio of weight to height – does not correlate well with fatness in individuals. Body mass index is less accurate in people with a more muscular body type, some ethnic groups such as Pacific Islanders, and the elderly, whose height shrinks with age. This can lead to unrealistic goal weights. Waist circumference and some other body measures, or bioimpedance analysis, provide better estimates of body fat.

You lose more weight doing exercise you are good at – FALSE

Individuals become more efficient and expend less energy as they become experienced with a particular form of exercise. A fit, experienced runner, for example, requires less energy to cover a set distance than an unfit individual of the same weight, age and gender. Weight loss requires excess energy expenditure, which comes more from activities with which an individual is not so familiar.

An obese person can be fit and healthy – TRUE

While fitness and fatness are usually inversely linked, studies have shown that many active individuals can maintain good health irrespective of body weight. There is also accumulating evidence that a significant proportion of obese individuals do not suffer the damaging metabolic effects from their extra weight that might be expected, while a significant proportion of lean individuals do suffer such health problems. This has led to new questions about the effects of obesity as a marker, rather than a cause, of disease.

You Dont Need to Join a Gym To Get In Shape

ash.jpg

Comment from online personal trainer Dean Piazza @ www.getfit.com.au

Its good to see even celebrities train from home as the article on Ashlee Simpson reveals.

For alot of people joining a gym is just not the best option due to the high membership fees, crowded or sweaty environment or simply because it just not close to where they work or live.
You can get into shape from your own home but you have to be motivated. If you have limited space, Invest in some light hand weights, and exercise ball and you can choose to do your cardio workouts such as fast walking or jogging outdoors, or your cardio training indoors on equipment such as treadmill, exercise bike or cross trainer.
Combine the above workouts with smart eating plan and you will be well on the way to a better body .

Need help with getting started or a plan to follow ?
email me with your questions and I will respond asap ! dean@getfit.com.au

Ashlee Simpson-Wentz will need to be in top shape for her upcoming debut on Broadway. Simpson-Wentz will be playing the role of Roxie Hart, the lingerie-clad seductress in the musical Chicago which is set to open in December 09. The actress who is already known for having a lean, fit body, hit the the cover of Women's Health magazine yesterday to talk about her simple at-home workout routine.

Simpson-Wentz gave birth to her first child, Bronx, earlier this year. According to reports, her plan during the pregnancy was to limit weight gain by doing plenty of low impact cardio. In the months following Bronx' birth, Simpson hit the gym hard with trainer Ramona Braganza, doing upper body strength workouts and abdominal crunches.

But now, as Simpson prepares for her debut on Broadway, it would seem that she needs to take it up a notch. The role of Roxie Hart in Chicago requires that she dance for hours in skimpy lingerie. She told Women's Health magazine how she prefers to stay in shape.

"Bronx Pilates! And these [biceps] are from holding him. He's in my arms all the time."

Simpson-Wentz is not the first fit celeb to stay in shape with at-home workouts that include a new baby. High priced trainers often can't compete with the workout that women get in the first few months of taking care of a new infant. These three simple exercise tips will help get new moms back in shape.

1.Take advantage of 3-5 minutes breaks by doing mini-blasts of cardio with a jump rope or climbing stairs
2.Learn simple body weight exercises that require no equipment and can be done anywhere or invest in hand weights
3.Combine aerobic activity with strength training to maximize weight loss benefits

Committing to trek the Kokoda Trail which is 100km in distance over rugged , mountainous terrain means you have
to be fit, strong and healthy .

As far as fitness I compare it to competing in a triathlon or marathon - its a gruelling event and its alot more than just being fit enough to walk !

With over 10 deaths already in 2009 , people are not preparing seriously enough and its risking your life .
I have coached 3 people online over 12 weeks to finish the kokoda trail in good health and spirits and the feedback from them was it was certainly worth the training to prepare the body and mind for this epic event.

Wii Fit - Can It Help Me Lose Weight ?

Wii Fit.bmp

comment from your online personal trainer dean piazza :

I always get asked my thoughts On Wii Fit and is it good for weight loss ? so thought i need to post a few words
on it !

I think Wii Fit is great for people who are totally inactive as it gets them off the coach and moving . Its also good for people who are totally house bound as you can add an alternative program than just workout dvd's.

But can it help you lose alot of weight ?
The answer is No - Your main tools in weight loss will be sustained cardio aerobic exercise such as cardio machines , fast walking , jogging etc combined with eating less and eating healthy.

Also having a structured exercise program so you know exactly what you will be doing each day and why
provides you with a blueprint for success rather than just making it up on the day or how you feel.

Wii Fit can add variety on top of this and every little bit helps so if you need an injection of new ideas
on top of what you are currently doing then Yes Wii Fit will be good but if Wii Fit is your only tool you are using
if you are wanting to lose weight then you will be disappointed with the results !

Feel free to email me questions and your thoughts on Wii Fit dean@getfit.com.au

Undeterred by insults and spurred on by svelte virtual trainers, Charles Purcell puts electronic workouts to the test.

I've always imagined myself as a fabulous, muscular Viking of a man. So it's a bit of a shock when a tiny talking fitness board with a squeaky voice shatters my illusions and tells me I'm more Tony Soprano than Arnold Schwarzenegger.

This electronic comeuppance comes as I embark on a test to see whether the various fitness games on the market – Wii Fit, EA Sports Active and Wii Sports Resort – can help you get fit and lose weight. The aim is to try them for a week and see if Fitness First really does have something to worry about.

But no matter how cute a talking fitness board is on Wii Fit, there's just no good way of telling someone that, with a body mass index of 32.05, he's obese. I watch in horror as the character representing me suddenly puts on a pudgy gut to the sound of mocking music. Why not have someone follow me around playing a tuba going “boom ba boom” while you're at it ?

Cellulite Exercise

Cellulite and Exercise

Below is a good article on the truth about reducing cellulite and the most effective treatments - Dont get ripped off with expensive lotions and creams when all you need is the basics in life - fresh healthy food, regular exercise, lots of fluids and massage to the specific cellulite region.
Exercises such as squats, lunges, step ups, stair repeats will also assist when combined with the above tips.

If you have a specific question or problem with cellulite you can also email me direct on dean@getfit.com.au

Cellulite is a terrible part of ageing for many women. We are appalled when we discover the ugly dips and dents on our bottoms and thighs.

But young, slim women also develop the undesirable feature, which makes the skin look like an orange peel. Women who get cellulite are at the mercy of the connective tissue under their skin. A range of products promise help, but experts say a healthy diet and exercise are the best weapons.

"Every woman has a predisposition for developing cellulite," says dermatologist Christoph Liebich. It's one of nature's injustices: men generally don't get it. The reason for that lies in the structure of the female connective tissue. A woman's skin is more pliable and has more fat cells stored below it.

The Pill and Weight gain

female muscle.jpg

Comment from your online personal trainer Dean Piazza :

An interesting study that shows taking the pill or in fact any form of medication interferes with the body's natural metabolism- not for everyone but certainly for alot of people.

With the pill if it prevents the female from building lean muscle you can be sure it will also increase the rate of fat storage on the body and ultimately slow your metabolism and the end result is a gain in weight.

If you gained weight after taking a prescription drug from your doctor speak to your doctor
to see if there is a link.

Be careful of any long term medication unless it is absolutely essential as it will more than likely affect your metabolism .
Get a second opinion from another doctor to see if there is an alternative solution.

Young women seeking a sculpted, muscular silhouette may want to avoid taking oral contraceptives, U.S. researchers said on Friday.
They found women who were not taking birth control pills gained 60 per cent more muscle mass after a 10-week weight training program than those who were.

The study, led by Chang-Woock Lee and Steven Riechman of Texas A&M University in College Station and Mark Newman of the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, will be presented at the American Physiological Society meeting in New Orleans this weekend.

The researchers studied 73 generally healthy women between 18 and 31 who completed a whole-body resistance exercise training program. About half took the pill and half did not.

The women were encouraged to eat at least half a gram of protein per pound of body weight each day - about a third more than recommended by US nutritional guidelines - to ensure they got enough protein and calories to build muscle.

Both groups exercised three times a week under the supervision of exercise physiologists, performing the same number and intensity of exercises.

At the end of the 10 weeks, the women who were not taking oral contraceptives had built significantly more lean muscle.

And blood samples before and after the training period showed the women on the pill had lower levels of muscle-building hormones such as testosterone and far higher levels of muscle-breaking hormones such as cortisol.

In a statement the team said that oral contraceptives appear to have a negative effect on women's ability to build lean muscle, but they added that future studies were needed to explain why.

Orthotics To Prevent Injury

foot logic.jpg

I have recently been trying out the new orthotic range from Foot Logic and I am impressed with the product and the support it offers my feet .

The problem with most sports shoes is while the shoe may be good , usually the removable innersole is flimsy and doesnt offer the arch support your foot needs to prevent pronation or supination.

Most people who need to lose weight have problems with their feet and knees so these orthotics really will help.
The original orthotics were very expensive but the ones I have used from Foot Logics are very affordable at $35

4 Ways To Stay on Track in 2009

You know what you should be eating and you know you have to be more active than what you are currently doing to drop a few kilos but sometimes its the mind battles that can be the difference between success and failure.

Below are a few tips from online personal trainer Dean Piazza:

* Be Realistic - Aim to lose approx 2-4 kilos per month - This is a realistic amount of weight to lose when you also have a busy work/life schedule. Remember the slower the weight comes off , the slower it goes back on if you have a '' bad month'' so dont let slow weight loss discourage you.

* Expect Challenges Be prepared you may get sick, may get injured or a stressful time at work may slow your training sessions but remember this is a normal for everybody and while it may slow you down by causing you to miss a few weeks it wont stop you ! These are all small tests to see how serious you really are.

* Be Committed Organise a routine that works for you each week and stick to it. People who follow a routine each day are more organised and more likely to succeed .

Said the Doctor to the Cancer Patient: Hit the Gym

This is an excellent article on the benefits of gym/light weight training for cancer patients and how it can help them recover both physically and mentally.

Do you think if they are prescribing gym sessions for the patients of cancer then it could possibly reduce the risk of contracting cancer ? I think so !

Most people who frequent gyms are under the age of 40 but its actually people over the age of 40 who have the most to gain from lifting light weights and staying strong.

Over the age of 40 your strength and flexibility levels rapidly decline so just doing two thirty minute gym sessions as a minimum will make a huge difference.

If you have any questions on what would be the best gym program for you you can email me @ dean@getfit.com.au

AS the group of women trickled into the aerobics studio at the Bendheim Integrative Medicine Center in Manhattan on a recent Thursday morning, there were subtle signs that this was no ordinary fitness class.

Fred R. Conrad/The New York Times

Irene Logan at a water-based class at a Brooklyn Y.M.C.A.
One woman told the instructor that she had missed a string of previous classes because she was grappling with fatigue, a side effect of her new cancer medication. Others wore colorful wraps on their arms, containment sleeves meant to protect against lymphedema, a painful swelling of the arm stemming from breast cancer surgery.

Sponsored by Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, this class for cancer patients has been around for some time, mostly in a league by itself. But in recent years, following studies that found exercise to be beneficial in combating the effects of cancer, the class has gained some company.

Gyms and fitness centers have begun stepping in to meet a small but growing demand for programs designed to not only hasten recovery but to address the fatigue of chemotherapy, the swelling of lymphedema and the loss of muscle tone.

Exercise injuries: how to prevent them

Large numbers of weekend warriors, casual tennis buffs and irregular joggers suffer sports-related injuries every week. One study conducted by Professor Kerry Mummery and colleagues from Central Queensland University estimated that more than one in 10 people had sprained a muscle, torn a ligament or broken a bone in the sporting arena.

Many of these injuries are passed off as minor problems, says Green, who is now a specialist sports doctor with Sports Medicine Australia. ..........................

Fear of fitness more than physical

If your resolution to get in shape always ends in failure, the problem may be in your head, not your work-out. Sam Murphy reports.

Personal training used to be all about whipping your body into shape. No more - hire a personal trainer these days and chances are you'll exercise some mental muscle, too.

"Exercise itself isn't rocket science," says Pete Cohen, a health and wellbeing coach trained in human psychology and behaviour. "It's getting people to enjoy it and stick with it in the long term that's the real challenge."

Do you have trouble sticking with your New Year's resolutions?

According to a Australian Psychological Society (APS) survey of people's health behaviours, lots of people plan to change their diet and exercise habits, but very few people stick to their resolutions.

To survive the six-month crunch point, the APS says it helps to identify your predominant thinking style: comfort, achievement or approval.

While everyone may use all three styles of thinking at some stage, developing a better understanding of your dominant thinking style can help you identify which strategies will help you stay motivated.

Rate yourself on the 12 questions below to identify your thinking style and find the most suitable approach suggested by the APS to help you keep those New Year's resolutions and improve your health.

Exercise Isn't One Size Fits All

People who perform the same amount of exercise can lose different amounts of weight, according to the first evidence-based study to show that exercise impacts people in different ways.

The study involved 35 overweight and obese people who followed a supervised exercise program for 12 weeks. The program was modified so that each person would burn 500 calories per session.

They did not, however, all lose the same amount of weight.

Keep Fit - Stay Young

Human growth hormone, naturally produced, helps keep you lean and strong.

When you dig into the biology of why ageing makes human bodies look old, it's not hard to see why serious exercise is the nearest thing to a youth drug. The reason the body of a 60-year-old looks different from that of a 30-year-old isn't just the wrinkling of its outer casing, but what's happening to the stuffing inside - when muscle and bone start shrinking, bodies sag and posture droops.

The good news is there's an antidote: building muscle.

Stretch those Tight Hamstrings

Most people over the age of 35 suffer from tight hamstrings mainly due to desk jobs, inactivity or
from a lack of flexibility training
.
Tight hamstrings can cause back, hip and knee pain or what is commonly known as sciatica
One of the best hamstrings stretches I have come across which is easy to do,
doesnt place any strain on your back
and really stretches out those hamstrings involves using a towel as per below

f_50_supine_straight_leg_hamstring_2.jpg

Lying on your back pull your foot/toes back toward your shin as far as you can control.
Keep the leg straight - use a towel/rope around the top part of foot and slowly raise the leg
Hold stretch for 20-30 seconds
Alternate between right and left leg 2-3 times
Repeat 2-3 times per week depending on tightness

Pregnancy and Exercise

Pregnancy doesn't mean you'll be kicked out of the aerobics class, but there are precautions to take.

With pregnancy, they will tell you these things: don't get too hot; make sure you have plenty to drink; make sure you have a snack handy; don't do anything that feels really wrong; stop if you feel faint; don't do high-impact aerobics; don't do abdominal exercises that necessitate lying on your back. You see how fast I did that? It will take them about 20 minutes and the rest of the class will look really bored, and they'll all give you dirty looks, and you'll wish you were dead. Yet Another Benefit of Exercise

Daily activity lowers your risk of surgery

-- A fitness routine can cut your risk of uterine fibroids by 40%, finds a George Washington University study. Women who were active for an hour or more a day had nearly half as many of the noncancerous tumors as sedentary women. Start moving today: Four out of five women may develop fibroids, and 25% go under the knife to stop symptoms such as pain and bleeding. Exercise seems to regulate estrogen and insulin, hormones that may spur fibroid growth. So walk, garden, or clean the house--it all counts.

Two more reasons to exercise

Add Intervals to Your Workout

If you're a regular exerciser, you may have heard of "interval training." Generally speaking, it means adding short bursts of intensity - such as speed - between periods of active recovery.

The basic premise of intervals is that they allow you to get your heart rate up to a pace that you can't normally achieve during a simple moderate paced workout. But, because you can't sustain that high intensity for long periods of time, you drop down to your moderate pace for a period of "active recovery." Once you've sufficiently recovered, you do another short burst of intensity. You continue this pattern through your entire workout.

Proponents of interval training believe that it helps burn calories faster than a standard, steady-pace workout. It can also help build speed or strength in endurance athletes.

Here are some simple ways to add intervals to your workouts:

Chronological age be damned - it's your functional age that matters

Ask anyone who has competed in a fun run and there is every chance they remember the moment they were overtaken by a person in their 60s. As you clock up another birthday, it's not so much age that decides what you can and can't do, but how you've used your body in the preceding years.

Pitted against a seasoned 50-year-old runner, an untrained, desk-bound person in his or her 20s is likely to run out of steam first, which is why exercise physiologists no longer pigeonhole people according to age. "We think in terms of a person's functional age - meaning how active they are and what they can do physically - rather than chronological age," says exercise physiologist Chris Tzar, who is the manager of the Lifestyle Clinic at the University of NSW's faculty of medicine.

Exercise Fights Fatigue, Boosts Energy

Regular Exercise Better at Upping Energy Than Stimulants, Study Shows.

By Jennifer Warren, MD
WebMD Medical News

Nov. 3, 2006 -- Feeling tired? A walk may be better than a nap for boosting energy and fighting fatigue.

New research suggests regular exercise can increase energy levels even among people suffering from chronic medical conditions associated with fatigue, like cancer and heart disease.

It may seem counterintuitive, but researchers say expending energy by engaging in regular exercise may pay off with increased energy in the long run

Fitball Made Simple

Originally employed by Swiss physiotherapists to help children with cerebral palsy, the fitball, or Swiss ball, rose to fame in the late '90s along with the formidable catch-cry of "core strength".

Because fitball exercises require you to balance before you crunch, they're more effective than traditional sit-ups at tapping into the deep abdominal muscles that wrap around your spine and keep you upright.

Your co-workers aren't just showing off when they perch at their desks on a pearly orb: beginning with as little as 10 minutes at a time, you can work the washboard as you attack the keyboard.

Unleash Your Abs

Seven steps to a six-pack that will get you noticed

Forget, for a moment, that the shape of your midsection largely determines how good you’ll look on the beach this summer and how well you’ll play beach bats. We’ll get back to that in a minute. The pursuit of abs goes deeper. You strive for a six-pack as though your life depended on it – and now science has proven that it does.

At a recent meeting of the North American Association for the Study of Obesity, research was presented stating that waist circumference is more conclusive than either weight or body-mass index (BMI) as a measure of disease risk.

Cardiologist Dr Arthur Agatston, author of The South Beach Diet, puts it this way: “Abdominal fat is different and more dangerous than fat elsewhere. Unlike fat directly under the skin, belly fat, which adheres to organs, is associated with increases in C-reactive protein and other markers of in? ammation that can lead to heart disease.”

Motivated yet? Good. We trust you will lay off the chips and onion rings. Remember, it doesn’t matter how wisely you work your abs: if your body fat is too high, they won’t show (for most men, anything over 10 percent body fat will keep your abs in hiding).

Fifteen Ways to fight heel pain

There are many different causes of heel pain, but the most common cause is plantar fasciitis. If you experience a sharp pain in your heel when you first step down in the morning, it is most likely due to plantar fasciitis. This problem is a result of excess stress through a long ligament type structure (the plantar fascia) in the bottom of the foot. The excess stress causes tearing and results in inflammation and pain. The classic symptoms are pain in the heel at the first step in the morning, or upon rising after long periods of rest. Many will complain of a sharp pain in the heel when they step out of their car or after finishing their lunch break. Other individuals only experience heel pain at the end of the day or during certain types of activity like running, soccer or tennis. The pain may extend into the arch and feel achy at the end of the day.

Can a vibrating platform provide an easy workout?

In a diet-obsessed world, we all have our own dream of the perfect weight-loss solution: a potato-chip diet, a pill that trims belly fat or, best of all, an exercise that builds lots of muscle with little work. The Power Plate, a new workout machine that looks like a doctor’s office scale on steroids, claims to do just that.

According to Power Plate’s manufacturers, if you stand on the machine’s vibrating plates for 10 minutes a day three times a week, you will lose weight, increase bone density and improve your overall health. But is that really possible?

Alternative to yoga and Pilates freshens up fitness routines

Years of living with Cushing's syndrome, a hormonal disorder, had caused Kari Hyer's muscles and bones to weaken. After undergoing surgery to treat the condition, she needed to rebuild her strength but weight machines "felt horrible," says Hyer, who lives in Gwynedd Valley, Pa., outside of Philadelphia.

So she began doing yoga and Pilates, both of which helped. But she credits Gyrotonics — billed as a combination of gymnastics, ballet, swimming and yoga that simultaneously stretches and strengthens the body — with really turning things around.

Time to toss the body mass index?

LONDON - The standard measure of obesity known as body mass index, or BMI, is badly flawed and a more accurate gauge should be developed, according to doctors in the United States.

Writing in Friday’s Lancet medical journal, the researchers from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Rochester, Minn., found that patients with a low BMI had a higher risk of death from heart disease than those with normal BMI.

At the same time overweight patients had better survival rates and fewer heart problems than those with a normal BMI

Good Morning Sunshine

Okay, I know what you're thinking ‑- people who get up in the morning to hit the gym, run, bike or do any other kind of exercise are obviously fitness-obsessed weirdos. They must be superhuman, ultramotivated, type-A personalities who don't understand the importance of a good night's sleep ‑- or of hitting the snooze button.

Hope for couch potatoes

Couch potatoes can lower their risk of developing heart disease, diabetes and other health conditions, if they start spending as much time exercising as they previously spent being inactive, new study findings suggest.

In the study, men and women whose health and fitness deteriorated when they volunteered to be physically inactive for six months, had a complete reversal of most of the subsequent deterioration in health measures when they increased their activity level during the next six months.

"Inactivity is worse than we thought," study co-author Jennifer L. Robbins, an exercise physiologist at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, said. Yet, she said, "a little bit of activity can make a big difference."

Robbins presented her team's findings during last week's annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine, held in Denver, Colorado.

Go for the burn, not the burnout

Take off at least one day a week and alternating hard days with moderate-to-light days can assist recovery.

June 5, 2006

We know what happens when you don't get enough exercise — muscles get weak, energy droops, mood and sleep patterns go haywire and flab creeps in. But what happens when you get too much physical activity? Re-read the first sentence of this paragraph.

Overtraining can produce many of the symptoms of under-exercising (aside from the excess fat). But how do you know if you're pushing it too hard, especially when people are telling you to work out regularly and with some intensity?

Researchers have called for an overhaul of exercise guidelines after a study found differences in the benefits of walking between obese and normal-weight people.

A study by the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) found walking for as little as 30 minutes at a "pleasurable" pace could improve fitness in the obese.

But Professor Andrew Hills said it also found walking at the same pace would do nothing for the average-sized person.

The Claim: You Burn More Fat by Exercising on an Empty Stomach

For most people who exercise in the morning, there is no getting around the question: Eat and run? Or run and eat later ?

Fitness experts will say that eating first provides fuel for a proper workout. But according to one common belief, exercising on an empty stomach forces the body to tap into its reserves, burning off calories stored as fat and providing a more efficient workout. So who is right?

The Sabotage Workout

Never confuse activity with achievement," advised former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden. His dictum holds as true at the gym as on the court.

We've all seen health club regulars who never seem to miss a day of working out yet never seem to make any improvements in their bodies. Worse yet, many of us are those people--eager to lose weight, build muscle and tone the abs. But somehow, it just isn't happening.

Fortunately, the problem may be simple to fix. Take a look around the gym. See the man peddling away slowly on the exercise bike while reading a magazine? The woman chatting on her cell phone while attempting leg curls? The two guys holding a conversation while lifting weights? They are all guilty of sabotaging their workouts--sometimes by transferring couch-potato habits to the gym, other times by not being smart about workout choices.

10 Tricks Of Buying Home Exercise Equipment

Choosing home exercise equipment can be tricky. Before you know it, you're handing over a wad of cash or signing a credit card slip for a clunky gadget that’s only going to gather dust in your sitting room. Here are some things to keep in mind when looking to buy fitness equipment for your home.

Choose something that suits your goals.
This may sound obvious, but buy equipment that compliments the activities you do. If you walk regularly, think about a stair-stepper, elliptical machine or stationary cycle. And remember, there is no one magic machine that does it all. The complete home gym includes cardiovascular equipment, some strength-training equipment and a place to stretch.
Measure.
Make sure you have room for the equipment you're considering. Will it fit through the door and around the tight corners of your staircase? If space is a problem, look for movable, collapsible or small equipment. For instance, you can now get a pair of dumbbells that takes up no more space than a flower vase and adjusts from 5 pounds up to 65 pounds. Fitness balls, jump ropes, steps and tubing are also good, compact choices.
Be realistic: What is your fitness level?
An exercise that looks easy when an Olympic athlete demonstrates it on the television can be tough when you try it out yourself. If this machine requires a high level of coordination and fitness, you may want to rethink your purchase.
Do you really need that?
Carefully consider the expensive bits and bobs that come on some machines. Many add-ons go unused and may ultimately be a waste of money. The 'extras' that help track distance or time add value only if they inspire you to exercise consistently

In League With Pilates

Pre-season training in rugby league traditionally consists of endurance and strength training, creating a sound fitness base on which to build.

"We use hill running, boxing and wrestling, plus three strength sessions a week, to get players to an excellent level of fitness," says Ben Gardiner, the Roosters' sport science co-ordinator.

But this season the Roosters have added an extra element. Over the past 10 weeks, regular pilates sessions have been working wonders for the team.
