Question :

I've been doing 100-200 sit-ups and stomach exercises a day for weeks and it doesn't seem to be making much of a difference. Is there another way that I can tone up and lose weight from my mid-section? I walk 40 minutes at a medium to high intensity per day yet I don't seem to see results. I eat reasonably healthily. Would Pilates help in toning up my mid section?

Answer:

First of all I would continue with the walking and sit-ups and try to be patient. Results don't happen overnight – give your body a chance to respond. Remember that sit-ups will strengthen the stomach muscles but the only way to lose the fat which covers the abdominal muscles is with regular exercise and combining this with a healthy diet. With your walking, if possible increase the duration to 60 minutes and include hills and stairs whenever you can. This will increase the intensity without having to actually try!

You mentioned you eat reasonably healthily - have a look at how healthy you really are. Write down your food intake over a period of three days and analyse where you are going right and wrong.

In regards to Pilates, I would recommend this as a great form of exercise for core stability and strength and after a few sessions your body will start to thank you. It is best to go to a reputable studio or instructor for proper guidance, especially when starting out.
